The CG-36500 is a 36 foot US Coast Guard lifesaving boat that was stationed in Chatham, MA. On February 18th,1952 the tanker "SS Pendleton" broke up in a major winter storm off Chatham. The CG-36500 and its crew were responsible for saving 32 of 33 crew members of the Pendleton who survived the initial breakup on the stern of the tanker. The Pendleton's captain and seven other crew members were lost when the bow of the ship sank. The heroic efforts of the CG36500's crew is documented in the film, "The Finest Hours" based on the book of the same name. The rescue is still considered the greatest small boat rescue in US Coast Guard history.
In 2016 "The Finest Hours" premiered at the Orpheum Theatre in Chatham and was sold out for months. Many of the scenes were filmed in Chatham. For me its fun to watch the movie because if you watch closely you can see fishing boats in the background that currently moor in Chatham Harbor, of course the movie was set in 1952. In the Summer the CG-36500 is on display at Rock Harbor in Orleans, MA.
